Lee Ranaldo Band feat. J. Mascis – “Albatross” (Fleetwood Mac cover)

In addition to providing some solid covers, the best part about Hear Music/Concord‘s upcoming Just Tell Me That You Want Me: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac is that it sheds some light on the more overlooked eras of the band.

While Lykke Li (“Silver Springs“), Best Coast (“Rhiannon“), The New Pornographers (“Think About Me“), Antony (“Landslide“) and Karen Elson (“Gold Dust Woman“), reworked classics from the most commercially successful period — the lineup from 1975-1987, featuring Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie — there are a few earlier songs on the tribute.

MGMT did “Future Games,” from the Bob Welch era, and both Billy Gibbons and Trixie Whitley cover some of the band’s earliest music.

Lee Ranaldo Band and Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis also dug into the band’s early era. They covered “Albatross,” from 1969, when the band was known as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Ranaldo and Mascis add a bit of feedback to the surfy instrumental, but keep mostly true to the original.
