DāM-FunK just released a new 12″ maxi single, “I Don’t Wanna Be a Star,” from his forthcoming album Invite the Light. The single also features three other new tunes, including a Prince cover.
“17 Days” was the b-side to “When Doves Cry,” and DāM-FunK does it perfectly. He pares down Prince’s big production to a lo-fi drum machine-and-synth setup, but he keeps all the funk. The layered high/low vocals capture the essence of the original recording.
In addition to “I Don’t Wanna Be a Star” and “17 Days,” the single also features two new instrumentals. It’s out today via Stones Throw.
DāM-FunK also released his own drum machine today, the Dam-Drum, which he worked on with Bleep Labs.
