Childish Gambino feat. Beck – “Silk Pillow”

Childish Gambino featuring Beck - Silk PillowsChildish Gambino, aka Donald Glover, has been trying really hard to overcome some cred issues. The rapper/actor recently dropped six new songs, featuring serious collaborators like Das Racist’s Heems, Nipsey Hussle and ScHoolboy Q. His latest offering, “Silk Pillow,” features none other than Beck.

If the name alone wasn’t surprise enough, the guest contribution doesn’t sound anything like the grown-up Beck we’ve come to know in the last 15-or-so years. He actually lays down a Mellow Gold-style, old-school rap.

Glover’s verse is still a bit of an acquired taste for me, but “Silk Pillow” is most definitely worth repeated listens just for Beck. Although he’s developed into quite an accomplished artist, it’s nice to know that Beck can still throw down a rap.

Blood Diamonds feat. Grimes – “Phone Sex”

Blood Diamonds featuring Grimes - Phone SexVancouver’s Mike Tucker, better known as Blood Diamonds, teamed with fellow Canadian Claire Boucher (aka Grimes) for “Phone Sex” – the song. C’mon, people.

The two originally played the song live, and then they rewrote some lyrics and mixed it in Kansas City (on the same board Thriller was mixed on, Tucker says). The track is featured on the upcoming Phone Sex 12″ (on pink vinyl) to be released July 24 on 4AD.

Big Boi & Theophilus London (feat. Tre Luce) – “She Said OK”

Big Boi and Theophilus London feat Tre Luce - She Said OKBig Boi recently revealed on Twitter that he’s working on a new solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors.

Shortly after, he released a new single, “She Said OK,” which features Tre Luce and rapper Theophilus London. It’s pure sex funk, from the wah-guitar groove to the dirty lyrics. You’ll either love it or hate it, but you’ll probably find yourself singing that hook no matter what.

Since OutKast went on hiatus in 2006, Big Boi released Sir Lucius Left Foot: The Ballad of Chico Dusty in 2010. André 3000, the other half of the duo, has been trying out acting, portraying Jimi Hendrix.

There’s no word on whether “She Said OK” is a cut from Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors or when the album is scheduled to be released.

Beck (feat. Jack White) – “I Just Started Hating Some People Today”

Beck - I Just Started Hating Some People Today - Blue Series Single - Third Man RecordsBeck just released a 7″ as part of Third Man Records‘ Blue Series. The single’s a-side, “I Just Started Hating Some People Today,” starts off like with a country twang — fiddles, acoustic guitars and an old-timey drawl. A fuzzed-out bass looms throughout most of the song, before it erupts into a full-blown punk outburst.

Jack White, who also produced the single, plays drums, acoustic guitar and lends what he calls “punk vocal” and background vocals.

Listen to “I Just Started Hating Some People Today” below and check out the single’s full artwork after the jump. The single, which features the b-side, “Blue Randy,” is out now on Third Man Records.

Matthew Dear – “Her Fantasy”

Matthew Dear - BeamsMatthew Dear released a new song today. “Her Fantasy” is the first single from his upcoming album, Beams.

Dear’s never been one to make static music, but “Her Fantasy” has incredible flow. The main beat shimmers while bass and synth pulses crest and fade beneath his distinct baritone. Even without his voice, “Her Fantasy” would be uniquely Matthew Dear.

Beams is out August 28 on Ghostly International.

Watercolours – “Night Swimmer”

Chelsea Jade WatercoloursAfter a simple Internet search, not much is known about Chelsea Jade, who makes music under the name Watercolours and played in the band Teacups. I stumbled across the Auckland, New Zealand, artist last summer when she released a music video for “Under,” a blissful, airy track with vocal and drum loops, backmasking and a calming aura. I downloaded “Under” and listened to it every other day.

Watercolours just released “Night Swimmer” via a Tumblr announcement, which leads you to a download link.

It’s ethereal and atmospheric with layers of vocals and a beautiful melody, frosted with vinyl crackles. Like “Under,” “Night Swimmer” is fine work within the realm of dream pop.

After expanding my search to find more about Watercolours, I found that she has no more official releases but has some songs on Myspace. The Watercolours Facebook page lacks a biography, only describing the band as “power lines against the sky and freshly laundered sheets.” This mysticism just feeds my curiosity, and I can’t wait to hear more.

Listen to “Night Swimmer” below and check out the video for “Under” after the jump.
